Nationalism in music

Music has always been an ideal medium to express nationalistic sentiment. Here are just a few famous examples: Ludwig van Beethoven almost dedicated his third symphony to Napoleon. However, Napoleon crowned himself emperor, so a dissapointed and disillusioned Beethoven became an anglophile. It resulted in gems like Variations on "Rule Britannia" & "God-Save-the-king"
After the French-German war of the 1870s Franz Liszt completed his piano version of the French national anthem La Marseillaise.
His son-in-law Richard Wagner had an opposing reaction: he wrote "Die Kapitulation" a "Lustspiel in antiker Manier."
